In honor of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, established by the United Nations, please join the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS) and the Rwandan-American Community of the Midwest on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 for the 27th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The event consists of an online panel discussion (3:30-5:00 p.m. EDT) followed by a commemoration ceremony (6:00-8:00 p.m. EDT).
The afternoon panel, hosted by the NDIAS, will highlight lessons learned from Rwanda and will feature Drs. Fiacre Bienvenu (College of Wooster), Emmanuel Katongole (Notre Dame), Hollie Nyseth Brehm (Notre Dame and Ohio State), Rachel Sweet (Notre Dame), and Ernesto Verdeja (Notre Dame). Rev. Daniel Groody, C.S.C. (Notre Dame) will moderate the session. Each panelist will speak briefly and there will then be time for Q&A.
Following the panel discussion, the NDIAS will join the Rwandan-American Community of the Midwest for a ceremony commemorating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The ceremony will include reflections from the Rwandan community and a keynote address by Professor Mathilde Mukantabana, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the United States. This year’s theme for the ceremony is “Remember – Unite – Renew.”
