Racially targeted hate crimes have increased for Asian populations across the globe since the coronavirus outbreak. The US increase has been spurred by President Trump’s anti-Chinese rhetoric, such as “Kung flu” and “Chinese virus.”

This talk analyzes the representation of Asians and Asian Americans in US media during the pandemic, drawing upon a dataset of front-page newspaper photos. Ultimately, the data reveals media coverage reifies stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans as well as constructis American identity in contrast with the Asian other.
